WARD-YOUNG ARCHITECTURE & PLANNING was founded in 1977 in Truckee for the purpose of providing comprehensive architectural services for projects requiring creative solutions and a sensitive response to the environment in which they are located. The founding principals, Tim Ward and Larry Young, continue to be actively involved in design and management of the firm’s projects. In 2000, Robert Heck and Don Fulda joined Tim and Larry as principals, after having been with the firm since 1984. The firm maintains studios in Truckee and Lafayette.
Management of the firm is shared by the four principals, as well as with associates. Four of the Associates, Ron Larkins, Mike Mussano, Ted Brobst, and David Bourke, have each been with the firm over 20 years. This stable, consistent ownership and management team provides clients assurance of continuity and responsiveness, resulting in the firm enjoying the working relationship with many repeat clients over many years.
Ward-Young has extensive experience in the design of projects in the Tahoe Truckee Area for residential, mountain resorts, public agencies, and private clientele.
Our founding objectives of providing creative solutions and sensitive response to the environment have resulted in green building practices and sustainable design solutions. We have been selected to design several public and private buildings for which our clients desire some level of LEED® Certification. We have several LEED Accredited Professionals on our staff. Our LEED building design experience includes the first building to be LEED Certified in Truckee (2006) and one of only 200 LEED Platinum (highest level of certification) buildings in the United States (2009). Ward-Young has established a long-standing record of designing a wide variety of successful projects, many recognized with national and regional awards for design excellence, including five “Best in the Basin” awards from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
